silver and enamel pedestal bowl
A small gem of a lacquered boxwood okimono. Modeled with infinite detail and inlaid jet eyes, the sculpture shows an intense Shoki, garments flying and sword upon his back, clamping down upon an opened barrel to restrain a passel of six mischievous oni – some within and others scrambling about to evade his grasp. This sculpture is a feat of technical acuity and clever design, prompting the viewer’s instant response – “how did the sculptor manage to carve this?” Itsumin signature on base. Height, 4.5". Meiji Period.
